Dementia care home
Designing wayfinding system for people with dementia living in a care home setting.
My teammate who is an architecture student designed a beautiful structure of the care home for people with dementia. My responsibility on this project as a graphic design student was to facilitate the navigation for residents in this care home.
I have decided to separate the area into different colours in order to make it easier for residents to find where they are and where they should go.
I have also identified where their decision points would be. People with dementia tend to be confused when multiple actions are required to take. Therefore, I have decided to place icons on every corners for them to be able to check where they are whenever they need to.
As designing way finding system for people with dementia, I had to focus on what elements of design can be a dementia friendly design. I have designed these icons for each rooms in dementia home. The key for dementia friendly design is to make it with “Literacy”, “3D look”, and “Clear colour contrast.”
I have also designed Landmarks to make the care home a calming place to stay in. Landmarks also help people with dementia to remember each area of the home.
Since people with dementia often have a tendency to keep wandering around, the building is structured with a circular corridor so that residents can walk around as much as they want without getting lost.
Considering that structure, I have designed landmarks as single-line pictures that go around the entire corridor with a single line. The main purpose of this landmark design is to give residents a mental stimulation by providing entertainment in walking.
